Stewards and Presidents Of The Gloucestershire Society In The 17th Century

On 1st December 1657, this Society was established by fifty Gloucestershire Gentlemen, inhabitants of the City of Bristol, whose names are recorded in the minute book of the Society.

did make provision for the Meeting of the Society of Glo'stershire Men in September, but Their Majesties King Charles II and Queen Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of York and Prince Rupert, being pleased to give the City of Bristol a visit at that time, the said provisions were taken for the entertainment of Their Majesties; and therefore the Meeting was deferred till the year ensuing.

Walter Tocknell Esq.
did make provision for keeping of the Gloucestershire Feast upon Thursday, the 19th day of August, but in regard of the infection of the plague it was ordered at the general Sessions of the Peace held for the County of the City of Bristol, that all public feasts be for this year forborne, as by a copy of the same order will appear:

"City of Bristol: At a general Sessions of the Peace holden for the County and City of Bristol, at the Guildhall of the said City, the 19th July, 1665, before John Lawford Esq., Mayor, and other Justices.
For the better preventing the plague in this City, in this time of infection in London and other places, it is ordered by this Court that the Gloucestershire, Bristol, Somersetshire and Wiltshire Feasts which are usually kept once in a year, and all other Monthly Feasts and Public Meetings in this City, be for this year forborne; and the several Stewards of the said Societies are to yake notice thereof according."
ROBERT ALDWORTH, Clericus Pacis.

In obedience to which order the said Steward did forbear to keep the said Gloucestershire Feast for this year; but resolve to keep the same (God willing) the next summer.

It is this day ordered, that all such persons as shall succeed in the Stewardship shall not be elected by the name of Steward, but of President of the said Society. 10th August 1682.
